A five-star grand hotel from 1912 in Wengen, the car-free village above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, facing the Jungfrau.

The way up

Wengen has no cars. The last stretch is the Wengernalp cogwheel train, then a short walk to a discreet sign and a tree-lined path.

The hotel's hand-drawn map of Wengen: a dotted route runs from the train station through the village to Grand Hotel Belvedere at the forest edge, past the cinema, the ski school and the cableway to Männlichen

Built in 1912

Restored with the patience it deserved. Two early 20th-century buildings, the historic Belvedere and the quieter Waldrand, kept their Heimatstil and Art Nouveau décor.

The Brasserie Belvedere under painted Art Nouveau arches and a golden patterned ceiling

The architects Arnaud Christin of Complete Works and Valéry Clavien of Clavien & Associés kept the old décor and had the furniture made with traditional Alpine techniques.
